3 DAYS BIRDING IN ENTEBBE BOTANICAL GARDENS,UWEC, MABAMBA WETLAND AND LUTEMBE
Brief Overview:
This 3 days birding trip will take you to Entebbe’s Botanical Gardens, Uganda Wild Life Education Centre (UWEC), Lutembe bay and Mabamba wetland renowned for hosting the rare shoebill that can be easily spotted at any time of the day. There also a variety of other bird species to see on this adventure.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1 –Arrival at Entebbe to Kampala
Upon arrival at the airport, you will be welcomed by our guide from Kofi Travel Safaris who will transfer you to your Hotel for dinner and overnight.
Accommodation: Protea Hotel (Luxury), the flight Hotel (Midrange), Central Inn (Budget)-Meal plan: Dinner
Day 2 – Birding at Botanical gardens and UWEC
After a delicious breakfast, our guide will take you to Botanical Gardens a host of over 150 species of birds. Here you will spend the whole day birding on the best bird trails on Lake Victoria and forest birds.
Look out for African Grey parrot, palm Nut vulture, the Bare faced-go away bird, Great Blue and Ross’s Turacos, Great Reed Warbler , Woodland and Pygmy Kingfishers, Red chested, Olive bellied, the grey Kestrel, Klaas’s and Diederik Cuckoo, Fain Tailed Widow bird, golden–backed weaver, Grey Woodpecker, Whilst bat Hawk, Black Bishop and many more.
Have a relaxed picnic Lunch in the gardens while birding and later head to Uganda Wildlife Education Center home to captive animals and over 170 species of birds.
Expect to see weavers, such as the rare Northern Masked Weaver and Orange Weaver, the migratory Egyptian goose, African Gray Parrot, ostrich, Cute little owls, Shoe bill, pelican, Peacock, the Crested Crane Marabou Stork e.t.c.
In the evening return to your hotel for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3 – Birding at Mabamba wetland and Lutembe Bay
After early Breakfast, transfer to Mabamba Swamp an hour’s drive from Entebbe. This wetland is on the shores of lake Vitoria is one of the best places to spot the exceptional Shoebill Stork and a variety of birds, offers plenty of viewing and photography opportunities and if lucky, you can encounter the elusive Sitatunga Antelope. The best way to enjoy the rich bird life is by canoe. Look out for many different birds like the Blue Swallow, Lesser Jacana, Papyrus Gonolek, Orange weaver, the threatened Pallid Harrier, Western Banded Snake Eagle, Black Egret, Red Cap, White Spotted Fluftail, Squaco, Black Crake, Black-faced Rufous Warbler , White Winged Warbler, Goliath heron, White Shouldered Tit, Weyns Weaver, Allen’s and Purple Gallinule, Bellied Heron, ducks among others.
Birding at Lutembe Bay
Lutembe Bay is located at the mouth of Lake Victoria’s Murchison Bay approximately 25 minutes from Entebbe. It hosts over 1030 bird species. Expect to see Greenshanks, curlew sandpipers, spur-winged plovers, marsh sandpipers, grey-headed gulls, black-backed gulls swirling, African open-billed stork, squacco herons, Hammer kop, Egrets, storks, Black winged stilt, Common moorhen, Black crake, Chets, Weavers, Widow bird, Doves, White and brown scrub robin, Grassland plain backed and Tree pipits, Yellow throated long claw, Flappet, Rufus necked larks, Senegal African wattle, Spur winged lap wing, Grey capped, Sedge and Reed wobblers, Papyrus granola, Blue headed coucal and White brown coucal among others. Later in the afternoon drive back to the Hotel for dinner or at the Airport.
